Whether you think of the glass of water as half full or half
empty, there is no denying the true value of water is in the
quality. Water is our most precious resource.
Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is water. Of that 70%, 98% is salt
water. Of the remaining 2% that is fresh water, about 90% is frozen.
The amount of water on our planet has gone unchanged since its
formation. With an increased population, the need for drinkable
water is more critical than ever.
That’s where we come in.
Chlorine is one of the most versatile, most widely used materials
in industry. Everyday products, from polyester clothing to vinyl
to cleaning products, list chlorine as one of their basic building
blocks.
Of course we know it best for water treatment.
Chlorine is typically stored in 150 pound cylinders, one-ton
cylinders, or fixed tanks and may be transported by truck or
railcar.

Chlorine is very useful in increasing healthful living, for
instance:
- Prior to 1908, typhoid fever was rampant, about 25 out of
every 100,000 succumbed to it in 1907. Within 30 years of the
first use of chlorination in water treatment (Jersey City,
NJ), typhoid fever was all but eliminated in the United States.
While other industrial countries have adopted the chlorination
process, typhoid fever is still prevalent in non-industrial
countries.
- 85% of the pharmaceuticals used to combat infection and disease
contain chlorine. Acetaminophen (pain reliever), vancomycin
(an antibiotic), and a vast assortment of other drugs include
chlorine among ingredients.
- Chlorine bleach is used to disinfect surfaces and is the
top material used in the battle against bloodborne pathogens.
- Artificial limbs and prosthetics are made of chlorine-based
plastics.
Computers and electronic devices that monitor vital signs, count
chlorine-based semiconductors among their components.
To many of us growing up, tradition mandated a trip to the community
swimming pool the day after school ended. Typically, this would
lead to reddened eyes and green hair, at least until the attendant
figured out the proper chemical balance.
Chlorination of swimming pools kills harmful microorganisms
that cause health-related problems such as gastroenteritis, Legionnaires
disease, ear infections, and athlete’s foot.
All but the largest swimming pools are typically treated with
bleach, which is the combination of chlorine, caustic soda, and
water.
Chlorine is very useful in increasing healthful living.
Over 98% of the U.S. water systems that disinfect drinking water
use chlorine.
